Picture of social media applications on an iPhone

In the digital age, social media accounts are an important way of securing your next job.

The job market can be a fickle place at the best of times, especially in an economy that’s still recovering. So how can you stand out and be heard over the competition?

The first question many of our admission advisors get asked by potential students is “how will this course help my career?” or “do employers recognise this qualification?”.

Ultimately working towards a degree is a great way to prove to employers that you have a keen interest in self-development, but this on its own is not enough. You also need to get that information out into the job market and get your efforts recognised by potential employers. Continue reading

2011 Graduating Class

Last weekend’s graduation was a very exciting opportunity for our academic staff to finally meet students in person at The University of Essex campus. Although our photographer hasn’t got the pictures back to us yet, fingers crossed we’ll have them within the next few days.

Apart from the day’s ceremony and well deserved celebrations, we also managed to grab a huge amount of feedback from our graduates. I’d personally like to thank all students who participated in this exercise and for providing such an overwhelmingly positive response! Your comments and pictures & videos will soon be added to our websites feedback page:

Kaplan Open Learning’s designated local charity

Donna Ineson from Kaplan Open Learning is delighted to announce that the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund has been adopted as Kaplan Open Learning’s local charity. The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Charity, based at the Leeds General Infirmary, supports valuable equipment, resources and research for the treatment of children with heart defects, whilst providing a support service for both the children and their families along the way.

The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Charity, based at the LGI, supports valuable equipment, resources and research for the treatment of children with heart defects, whilst providing a support service for both the children and their families along the way.

Their motto is: “Our aim is to ensure that these children have the best possible chance of survival. Our hope is to give ‘each child a childhood’; our dream is to give them adulthood.”

As a parent of a child who recently had corrective open heart surgery at the LGI, this really is a charity close to my own heart. I know how important it is to ensure they can continue providing these services and giving all families hope. Without this, the situation we found ourselves in would have been unbearable. From the amazing equipment they buy, the recently refurbished playroom on the ward, to the simple parent’s room that they provided funding to create, the work they do makes a huge difference to the lives of the children and parents. You can see for yourself the difference in Abigail now!

I look forward to getting stuck in with everyone and raising some money so that we can continue helping other families with the misfortune of having a child with a heart defect. Let’s have some fun and raise some cash!!

Been a very busy month for Kaplan Open Learning, we have experienced a large number of applications and are rapdily filling places quickly for the April intake.  As we hear of more and more media news about the pending tuition fee increase combined with fewer university places this as started to give way to the stark realisation that a university degree is going to cost more.  If you are not already a graduate, there will never be a better time to start studying for a degree as students already on a course will not be affected by the government funding cuts.

Beat the University Funding Cuts

The Government is proposing major changes in higher education funding due to take effect in September 2012. If you are not already a graduate, there will never be a better time to start studying for a degree as students already on a course will not be affected by the funding cuts. In addition, Kaplan Open Learning offer lower fees than traditional universities and the opportunity to spread fees by allowing you to pay for a module at a time.
How do I benefit:

• Our fees for one level/year are 30% lower than traditional universities. For the academic year 2011/12, the maximum tuition fee a university or college can charge is £3,375. Our fees for the same number of credits is £2,340.

• We do not charge extra for books.

• You do not have any travel or accommodation costs.

What do i do next?

For anybody who has aspirations to gain a degree, this is a good time to get started and take advantage of higher education funding before it disappears.

To apply you can either contact one our admissions advisors on 08000 527 526 or fill out an online application form.

OLTF Calls for Greater Use of Online Learning

British universities and colleges must make online learning a priority to meet growing student demand and remain competitive in an increasingly international higher-education landscape, a new report states. The   report,  “Collaborate to Compete: Seizing the Opportunity of Online Learning for U.K. Higher Education,” was produced by a study group set up in 2009 by the government council that finances higher education in England. Its purpose was to maintain and develop the nation’s position as a world leader in online learning.

The report highlights several examples of innovative online learning strategies at British institutions.  For example the report cites the partnership between the University of Essex and the Kaplan Open Learning who offer online courses in Britain. The report says that courses offered by those programs are “flexible, accessible, provide practical work-based skills, and can fit around work and family commitments which prevent students from attending a traditionally delivered course.”
